Mahoousuc Initiative: Partners and Goals
The Mahoosuc Initiative was formed by three local partnersthe Mahoosuc Land Trust, Androscoggin River Watershed Council, and Northern White Mountain Chamber of Commerceand the Northern Forest Alliance, led by its member groups the Appalachian Mountain Club, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and The Wilderness Society. More recently, the Tri-County Community Action Program has joined this team. The Mahoosuc Initiative also has an Advisory Board [link to list] of more than thirty local stakeholders from Mahoosuc communities, including local officials, business owners, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Mahoosuc Initiative seeks to provide information tools for local communities, such as our Mahoosuc Region Resources Report . The Mahoosuc Region Report identifies the regions most valuable natural assets, tracks the trends that are changing the regions lands and communities, and provides a toolbox of ideas for communities to direct future changes. We are convening small kitchen table conversations and larger public meetings using this report as a springboard for dialogue and visioning for the regions future.
The Mahoosuc Initiative partners have also been taking action in support of Mahoosuc land conservation projects that have emerged in the last two years. Partners in the Mahoosuc Initiative helped the Trust for Public Land and the State of Maine to gain $2 million in federal Forest Legacy Program funding to acquire 3,688 acres in Grafton Notch for addition to the Bureau of Public Lands Mahoosuc Unit.
